Journey to Becoming a Self-Published Author

WEEK ONE

Recently I made the decision to commence writing a business book to add to the collection on my bookshelves and the bookshelves of, hopefully, offices throughout the world.

I have spent the best part of the last decade working in the publishing industry alongside editors, designers, typesetters and the like, but it has only been in the past month that I have seriously considered crossing the road and joining the other side – The Authors!

A part of my brain says, what better way to understand the publishing journey from woe to go than write, publish and promote my book.

But the other part of my head says, what are you mad! What do you know about writing? Ah, the face of fear, rearing it’s ugly head, again! Facing this fear has been a very conscious decision for me, something I have been working on over the past year, no easy task and certainly a work in progress.

As part of this journey, I am committing to documenting my experiences in the form of this blog, warts and all! I am not expecting this to be an easy road to travel, and I am sure I will hit many bumps along the way. But it is time for me to let go of the tight rein I have on fear, and give it a go.

Hopefully, I can inspire one or two of you to let go of your fear and write your story and share it with the world. We all have a story to tell, and our shared experience is unique to us. We can experience the same event as the person next to us, but our perceptions can be significantly different.

An example of this happened to our family a number of years ago. When my daughter was three, she suffered a traumatic eye injury when she walked directly into secateurs I was holding. The whole family lived through the consequences of this day, but each one of us has a unique take on how this one event affected our lives. Mine, one of guilt and regret, hers, one of pain and suffering. If we were both to write about this day and the months and years afterwards, we would be writing from a very different angle about the same life story.

We all have a unique perspective on the events that occur in our lives, a unique point of view and a story to tell. July 2016 marks the start of my writing journey, and we shall see where it ends up.

Until next week, happy writing.
